SPJ needs volunteers for service project

by jdgreer on February 6, 2012

Good afternoon,

My name is Amanda Sams, and I am the Vice President for the UA chapter of SPJ. I am sending this message as a reminder that our February community serviceĀ  event is tomorrow, Wed. Feb. 8, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of West Alabama. If you can even come for just one hour, we are encouraging everyone to attend! We need lots of volunteers, since we will be working with about 150 kids.

We are asking that everyone wear crimson shirts so that we all match. Basically you will be helping the kids make Valentines Day cards and teaching them a little bit about interviewing and how to write a news story. When you arrive at the club, you will be given a news story template that is very self explanatory. As you get to know the kids, you will ask them “interview questions” to fill in the blanks on your sheet. (I will explain the activity in lots of detail before we go inside!) You will help them glue these finished stories onto a red heart, which you will then insert into a homemade Valentines card that the kid will make.

We will also be serving snack to the kids–Hawaiian punch and cookies. If you signed up to bring cookies, please know that we just found out that they need to be store bought and cannot be baked! We have a lot of cookies, fortunately, so if you were planning to bake for us, please postpone that effort until our bake sale in early March. If you would still like to donate one or two dozen store bought cookies, you can drop them by the journalism dept. office on the 4th floor anytime tomorrow until 1:30p.m.

We are establishing a carpool/caravan that will be leaving from the Publix parking lot at 2:30p.m. If you need a ride, we have space for at least 8 people, so just let me know by responding to this email. If you would like to follow us over to the Boys and Girls Club in your own vehicle, you can meet us in the Publix parking lot at 2:30 pm. (We will be holding up an SPJ sign so that we are easy to find!)

Otherwise, the address to the Boys and Girls Club is 2201 Positive Place. I am attaching directions to this email for those of you driving yourselves.

Thanks so much for volunteering to help us out with this project! We are very excited, and I know the kids are too.

All best,

Amanda
